Meztiza Rhetoric

Thought I would share some of the books I´m reading and using for my dissertation prospectus! I recommend any of these books...especially Mestizo Democracy: The Politics of Crossing Borders. Burke uses Mexican philosopher Enrigue Dussel´s Philosophy of Liberation to further his ideas.

Murals on the walls of el Palacio Gobierno de Durango

The picture accompanying the title is a mural found in the Palacio Gobierno de Durango. Gorgeous! The walls are covered with the people's history. This mural shows a woman whose soul is burned in with the memory of the Aztec people. Los Mexicanos no se olvidan de su pasado indígena! Mexicans don't forget about their indigenous past!

Quien Soy - Who I am...

Cristina Devereaux Ramírez, Ph.D
After teaching in the public schools for 12 years, I quit my job and went back to school. Change is always good, but when it's done mid-life, it's quite stressful. I'm glad I took the leap. I am now an assistant professor at the University of Arizona. People tell me I look "muy gringa" or Anglo, but my soul..mi alma...es Méxican! My mom, Sandra Gonzalez, is Chicana, and my father, Neil Devereaux, un anglo, who has his Ph.D. in Spanish Linguistics! Mis papas (my parents) nos enseñaron todo lo bonito de la cultura Méxicana, todo bonito de nuestros raices. I'm proud of who I am... soy mestiza!

Poem - Printed Revolutionary by Maribel Ledesma

I was told that I shouldn't cause waves
drowning would be a horrible death
for a desperately needed radical
Us leftists should go down in battle,
uzi strapped upon our backs.

I was told that revolution meant registration,
flyer design, poster painting, gathering the
masses
Us progressives should be revolutionaries
in their terms
To be a poet was no good
One had to die with placard in hand,
not a pen

My movement moves in silence
hidden under the veil of inactivity
some think I'm unproductive
measure my activism by hours organizing
meetings
but I have a bigger vision
There will be no uzis for me
signs to be painted

My revolution exists on paper
I exercise my right to speak for the unspoken
for
I am revolutionary too
Us writers are also part of the movement
Or do you think this poem is not political?
